July 4th, 2019, Forks, Washington Destruction Derby

We arrived at the Destruction Derby as the first event was beginning and missed the announcements. To my surprise when thee event ended, it was young ladies driving the cars. The announcer mentioned that the "Big Boys" would be starting the next event.

It was classic; cars racing around crashing into each other. It was interesting to watch the strategy of some drivers who often use the rear of their car to save the front end from being totally damaged. It was also quite interesting to watch people drive cars where the front tie rods or something had broken and the wheels aimed in different directions. Other cars would actually be running on the rims and we saw one where the entire wheel all came off.

When they announce the mini cars (or some similar name), it took us a while to realize that they were 10 years old boys. The organizers were obviously disappointed that only two children signed up so they decided to have a race instead. During the race, the cars still bumped into each other but the one young boy was quite the driver while the other seemed lnexperienced which was surprising as he was already 10 years old. When they flagged the end of the race, the winner forgot to brake apparently and crashed into the wall, luckily no one was injured. Then he did a victory lap and as he went to drive out of the stadium, he crashed into another wall. This one brought out the paramedics just to make sure he was okay.

The last event is apparently "do or die" but with only one person being taken to the hospital. The field was crowded so the cars drove around in a large circle to start. Almost immediately they stopped the race as for the first time today, one of the cars actually rolled over. The crowd cheered as the driver was helped out and raised his arms showing he was okay. Later in the event, they stopped the race again and we realized a driver had gotten out of his car. He may have been acting dazed or something because paramedics rushed to him and the race stopped for quite a while as they examined him, tied him to a flat board and after what seemed like quite a long time to be gathered around him, they took him out to the waiting ambulance.

There was a clear winner but even as all the other cars had apparently been disabled, he kept crashing into cars. It was actually a relief when they finally stopped the event. Even in his victory lap, he hit a few more cars. The event created a adrenaline rush for me throughout the rest of the day. I think that will be my last and only Destruction Derby.
